Color Corner™—Trends in Color and Design

Color is used to convey emotions, warnings, actions, and more. It's used everywhere. Tastes change and what is in today, might not be tomorrow. Globalization has sped this process along even more rapidly than in years past increasing consumer choices. So how does a large manufacturer selling vanity tops to a big-box store choose their colors? How does a small fabricator in Indiana or Minnesota decide what to display in their show room? Luckily, color trends for surfaces like counters, bathrooms, and pools do not change as rapidly as clothing tastes.

While larger manufacturers will lean towards historically safe colors that do not go out of fashion for long periods of time, the mid-size to small local or regional fabricator has the option of providing new current colors mixed in with comfortable foundation colors. Add research on the supply and demand of surface colors to help generate ideas for their area, mixed with regional trends, and you have the answer to the above questions. Simple—right?

As mentioned in the Colors in the NOW section, the major color trend speaking to interior designers today is the color of nature. Creating natural earthy interior spaces that provide a cozy feeling continues to be the consumer choice. TIP: Dark colors show scratches and finger prints more than light colors.

Be Gone Cookie Cutter Interior Designs!

The more people purchase products like engineered stone, the less unique and interesting it becomes. This is human nature. Giving more unique style to showroom pieces might be a way to add a level of distinctness to a product like engineered granite (Terra Bella) or solid surface (Dura Stone). There is a lot you can do with these types of products that can not be done with granite and quartz. Here are a few links that might help generate ideas. As new sites are discovered we'll pass them along to you—so check this page from time-to-time!
